Principal photography for the first season began on May 1, 2019, in Charleston, South Carolina, with filming locations including James Island, Johns Island, and Kiawah Island, and later expanded to include Wilmington, North Carolina, and Morocco in subsequent seasons.
In December 2020, a North Carolina teacher filed a lawsuit claiming the creators stole the plot from his novel about Blackbeard's treasure, but the lawsuit was dismissed by federal judge Timothy Batten, who found the works had substantial differences despite sharing high-level themes of treasure hunts.
